Lately we have been amused by the fact that 5 1/2 month Ambrose seems to be saying, "Mamamama mamama Maaaa" (or some other variation of "mama") while he is crying. It was amusing, but seemed unlikely that he was actually asking for me while crying at this age. He doesn't do it every time he cries though, just the majority of the time like when he cries because he is hungry.

So, last night I was in the bathroom getting ready for bed and Ambrose woke up crying (when he does this in the night it is strictly to nurse and get right back to sleep). Thomas picked him up and the crying got more intense and Thomas said kind of jokingly, "He must want you- he's doing the 'mamamamamaaaaaaa' cry." I picked Ambrose up and got ready to nurse and the second he knew what was to come and was in my arms- he stopped crying. Weird. We both laughed and Thomas said, "Aw, see he really wanted his mama." I went to sleep after nursing the hungry baby and shrugged it off as yet another coincidence.

Then this morning the same thing happened three times in a row. So, in other words "mama" is code for food. Is this just a crazy coincidence that keeps happening over and over or is this like that Simpsons episode were that crazy salesman could decode a baby cry? I've never had a baby before, but it seems a bit early for speech. When do babies generally say their first word?

So cute! I actually think Dane did the same little mamaaaaa cry when he was hungry...but I don't remember how old he was. Doesn't matter, it's sweet that Ambrose wants you.
Stephanie! I love looking at your little family! You are the best writer and I always love reading your posts because they are so funny. I can't believe how big your little baby is. He is SOOOO cute! I haven't ever had a chubby baby. I am jealous! Lisa
I knew Ambrose was smart he must take after his Aunt Ashley.
i don't know steph, after looking at the rapid growth of the young spawn's nose in the last post, i suppose that anything's possible.
and really, is it any surprise that your child would be brilliant? we all saw this one coming.
brilliant and a talker, like his mama. i'm sure you chat to him all day long about how much you miss me among other things and that he is going to be an early talker.
i heard somewhere that the "mamama" sound is actually a natural sound babies make when they want to eat because its similar to the sucking motion they make when they nurse. it sounds like ambrose has put two and two together.
ha i loved "i've never had a baby before..."
Love to see the little man grow!
There are actual studies done about these "Early speech" patterns. Food is related to the Mamama sounds. They have different sounds for sleepy and boredom...
Way to go Ambrose!
He's brilliant! Its the Hawkins side of the family :)
