ok let's try the other meat

my child is a fruitarian. he doesnt like meat, vegetables, eggs, cheese, the list goes on and on. he loves fruit in any form (dried fruit, applesauce, canned fruit, regular fruit...etc.) and oatmeal, yogurt, milk, sometimes bread, and any cracker/treat/chip put in front of him. i dont mind if he never eats meat. i can't imagine though, that at the ripe old age of 14 months he is morally opposed to eating meat or that he has subscribed to some sort of religious beliefs prohibiting it.

i have tried giving him lunchmeat: no way. so i thought, kids love those vienna sausages right? so i found the healthy version- turkey sticks and gave him those: nice try lady. fine, fine, have a hot dog... (well, turkey dog): tossed off the tray without so much as a sniff in it's general direction. ahhhh! hmmmm....

in desperation i have resorted to the other meat: mini corn dogs... who knows what's in those little babies... but at least he can get the general taste of meat while still thinking he is having junk food... then i'll slowly but surely ease him into eating thinly sliced pieces of turkey lunchmeat before he knows what's what.

so i realized this would take a fair amount of trickery on my part and flattered myself that not only was i up to the task, but i was the only woman for the job.

i cooked them in the oven instead of the microwave- if we're gonna do this, let's do it right.

i sat across from ambrose with a plate of mini corn dogs. one look from him indicated that he was anticipating nothing short of an event. he knew something big was going to happen. i ate one of the corn dogs, "yum!" i said and he grinned and held out a chubby hand. i said "say please..." he eagerly signed "please" to me (gotta make him think it's something so good he would want to say please for it). i held a mini corn dog out and he almost smashed it in his paw he was so excited. he put it up to his mouth...yes yes...i am a genius... nope, nope. fake out. back down to the tray.

he holds out another hand- alright he is double fisting the corn dogs. now to eat one of them, just one. i eat one right in front of him and he acknowledges me with a supportive head nod. "ok buddy- your turn!"

he ceremoniously holds one mini corn dog in the air and giggles with glee. he swoops it down into the general atmosphere of his mouth and then swoops it down to his tray with a smash and a smear...

no dice.

or shall i say no meat.

none.

ever.

i call thomas to please pick up some protein powder from costco. the chocolate kind. i make him a shake the next day and he loves it. i guess that'll do pig, that'll do.

That has got to be frustrating. I remember one of our boys not liking meat, but obviously they have grown out of it since I don't remember which one it was. One day. Love the story though!!! Very easy to picture! Its true man, kids are smart and know how to fake out their parents, even at a young age. Still waiting for the word on your move this way. I'm happy to apartment hunt/house hunt for you when it gets close!! :) We would love you have you guys here.

Ambrose is so cute! Who can turn down mini corndogs? Those are the best things ever.

hahaha that was so funny! (have you seen that scrubs? ha!) You are such a funny writer. I totally know what you mean, too. We have a fruitarian at our house too. Seriously! I swear our kids are twins separated at birth.

Connor will not eat a solid vegetable for the life of us. The kiddo loves cheese and bread though... so I always have to steam broccoli or something and cut it up into tiny tiny pieces and hide it in a cheese quesadilla or the like. And the only fruit he likes really is bananas and maybe a strawberry. Every thing else he basically throws to the floor. I understand! So frustrating!

P.S. I just read "brady and rachel's" comment and noticed they were in OR. Are you guys thinking of moving to OR? Or just the states in general?

we arent planning on moving soon, but know that we will move to the mainland someday- we just have no idea when or where. we have always fantasized about living in the pacific northwest though since it is so lovely and interesting and now has an increasing number of friends who reside there. :) it is definitely on the top of my list since thomas has already said no to my home state (california) because it is way to crazy to license there (more trouble than its worth and too expensive to live there- i agree with him)

so yeah, why not oregon? :)

awesome...bless you for trying. try again later. Maybe chicken nuggets? With ketsup? good luck. He'll come around... I'm thankful for multi-vitamins.

Simon doesn't really eat meat either. He loves fruit and bread more than anything. Luckily for us he is not opposed to beans so we're still able to pack him full of protein every now and then.

mini corn dogs are a staple at our house... however, Eliza thinks they taste better after she's peeled off the breading.

She is not a fan of her veggies, so I pay way too much buying V8 Fusion juice. It's a full helping of vegetables and fruit, but the fruit flavor masks the veggie flavor.

I have to say if it's any comfort to you, vincent is the same way, it's as if they can smell the meat miles away. Yeah, they know it's covered in a deep fat fried buttery goodness but oh no, you can't fool me mom.

velzy was a self proclamed vegitarian for a long long time- till one day the sample lady at costco gave her one of those dyno nugget things and miraculously she started eating it, and wanted more. amazing.

kids huh? i am sure he will come around one of these days!

you know what you should try? lion pups at a smithfield blue sox game. (yes, smithfield blue sox are a club team here in my town and the concessions sells home made corndogs with mysterious (in a good way) mustardy sauce on top for $1. come try.)

I just thought of this -- you're in Hawaii, try Spam! Those Spam musubi at the Seasider are such a guilty pleasure.
