We have been cleaning out a lot of old boxes and I found this poem that Thomas wrote when we all looked and acted like this:
I had no idea where it was for at least a year or two and when I spotted a corner of it in an old drawer I instantly knew what it was and snatched it up like a pirate stumbling upon treasure! He doesn't write much, which is annoying because he is a better writer than me and nice because ... well he is a better writer than me dang it! It's annoying when someone is good at EVERYTHING. ;)
Love you Thomas. Thanks for documenting the everyday and simple sweetness of the most life-changing time in our young lives.
The Time Between Sleep
He fell asleep with a whimper and a long yawn
So I drive us home the long way

he's like waldo.
when you have children, it's inevitable that one parent is usually missing from a family photo since one parent is usually taking the photo. recently i found not one but TWO pictures of me and my honey. even more surprising? both have a little guy peeking out in the background.

in memory of christmas
we both agreed it was the best one of all. is there anything more fun than seeing your two year old open and exclaim over his presents? (he would have been totally happy with his stocking alone. ha!) or the christmas miracle of asher REALLY learning how to sit up and play with his toys and then keep sitting up all day long. or the fun we had having a little party to celebrate Christ's birth? and then there is the fact that we get to just relax and enjoy each other's company all day long with no distractions. ahhhhhh. :)
it was a happy happy holiday and instead of being too sad it's over, which inevitably we are, we are keeping the fun going today. just got back from a perfect beach day and now the boys are bathed and napping. i love the holidays. hope yours was special too!

gettin' his hair did.
this little chipmunk needed a trim.
so we gave him a sucker
and he was cool until the clippers started "makin a noise!"
which was apparently downright distressing until his barber finished up and let him play with the hose
hats off to you thomas. this is a task i would never attempt and you did it fast and well!

scientific proof
thomas usually buys one pair of shoes that he wears everyday the whole year through. he thinks he's getting a different pair and switching it up each year, but they are always so similar i have to laugh.
today he ordered 2010's pair after much debate and made me a little chart to prove that they aren't the same pair each year....
CLEARLY they are so wildly different! am i blind or something?? :)

come what may and love it
it's been a junk day. i feel like i have too much to get done lately and i'd rather just be with my kids... oh yeah and my wallet has completely and mysteriously vanished and just a bunch of annoying randomness was getting me down so that by the end of today i was in a funk, nursing my baby and dreading doing anything but cuddling him. i hate that feeling (not the cuddling one... the dread and gloom) and then the phrase "come what may and love it" came into my mind. i watched this video and cried a bit. it was just what i needed and i am grateful to have wise counsel to cling to on days like today that really aren't that bad in the grand scheme. and dont you just love elder wirthlin? i miss him. anyway, thought i'd share. it will really just take a moment of your time and i hope it lifts you up as it did for me.

want your own sewing cabinet?
we saw these on craigslist last night as we were browsing possible furniture pieces for our new place and i thought these were all awesome... in fact, we were kind of laughing that there was all of a sudden SO many options, but i am still happy with mine.
none of these are cheap, but our wasn't originally either. you can always ask for $100 less and see what happens. it worked for us!

the most fun family activity we've ever had!
well, i don't know if that is true for sure, but it is the most fun i can remember having in a long time! and i feel like we have a lot of fun. anyway.
what's more fun than choosing all the new appliances, faucets, mirrors, doors, the vanity, light fixtures, fans, the toilet, and paint colors for your new apartment? nothing i tell you. nothing. it's the best saturday activity thomas has ever suggested!
my sisters and i used to draw very meticulous house plans growing up. did anyone else do this or were we just weird? we also wrote down potential names for our future children. my list changed from year to year. how domestic of us all! haha anyway, my in-laws are very cool and although this will be their place to rent out when we leave someday they are letting us have so much say and i feel like this new apartment project is like a dream come true! so so fun.
i'm pretty sure trips to the home depot were boring for me as a child. our kids definitely had times of complaint, but ambrose got to get in on the act
and i also brought books and snacks to keep him occupied.

my sewing heaven!!
earlier in 2009 i bought and fell in love with this book:
the projects and patterns are so happy and desirable. i wanted to make everything in there, but one page became my particular obsession and that was this one:
it's a sewing cabinet.
you may have heard me mention it on here before, or a few million times in conversation... i love the idea!
it's a place for all your sewing stuff that is strewn about the house in various untidy locations. a place that will always be set-up and ready to go when the sewing bug bites so you dont have to haul your machine out, locate your fabric and notions and set up messy camp on the kitchen table. a place that can be self-contained, organized, and CLOSED when you are not working so little hands cant crawl or walk over and get into expensive machinery or dangerous cords.
i was convinced that such a perfect piece of furniture existed for me and so it was to be my mother's day/birthday/boxing day/kwanza present! we have been searching craigs list and various other stores both in person and online since early may.
everything we found was either too small (you dont want to be cramped in a tiny space when sewing), too expensive, didnt ship to hawaii (dang you ikea!), or was made of cheap wood that wouldnt lend itself well to the olive green i was planning on painting it.
and then the other night, after months of patient searching, thomas found this on craigs list:
and got it for $100 less than they were asking for and brought it home to me and she is EXACTLY what we have been looking for!
she sits in our room now. the pictures dont do her finish justice. it's a lovely antiqued black so i may not paint her olive green afterall, but we shall see.
here's what she looks like inside, without any sewing stuff in there yet. we will wait to get her all set-up for sewing when we move into our lovely new place in a few months:
so that top shelf is adjustable and will mostly have fabric i think, the next shelf down will be where the machine goes and other sewing items i dont want the boys getting to, right underneath there is a desk that can roll out to create more space for sewing so the pedal can go right underneath me, and the bottom shelves will hold everything in a very organized manner of course. :)
i absolutely cannot wait to get upstairs and get everything unpacked and organized into my little sewing heaven! i promise to post a picture when that happy day comes- yipee!

but mostly it works out for us
on tuesdays and thursday at na kamalei. we have been attending this hawaiian culture/language preschool since ambrose was barely 18 months old and he has come so so far! everyone is so loving and kind and they make our whole family feel welcome each week.
they've been emphasizing hawaiian protocol a lot more this session and so we have been working hard to learn our pule or prayer (listen to how spiritual the culture is.... this is not a mormon preschool and is state funded):

Mahalo no keia la
A kokua mai ia makou
Keia ko makou leo pule
Ma ka inoua o Iesu
Amene
which means:
O thou art God
Have mercy upon us
Thank you for this day
And help each of us today
