false alarm?

i thought maybe just maybe i was gonna have a baby last night so i didnt worry too much about writing my entry for oliofolio.... but here we are this morning and there is no baby and everything seems as it was before.

so i quickly wrote this right now in explanation of what happened and i like it. it's not anything that would be published anywhere, but it is now a page in our story.

and who doesnt love a little flight of the concords anyway?

making stuff

it was my turn again on oliofolio and i kept it short and simple this time: click here if you wanna see. this week's theme is bookshelf. so i decided to be literal.

also, i sewed something from this awesome book:
it's a big tote bag- i'm gonna use it as a diaper bag/purse since i will be carrying around a whole lotta toddler/infant paraphernalia very soon. i will get a photo up as soon as i finish the handles. it was so fun to make!

and that's it! now go create something. ;)

i'm beginning to realize

as mothers day approaches, i have been thinking about how my own wonderful mother has taught me many lessons about motherhood. and i get a lot of great things from her: my love for sewing, i dance in the kitchen (and everywhere), i laugh a lot (sometimes inappropriately) when i am tired, i dont get stretch marks when i am pregnant, and i like to serve others. she passed down all of these things to me.

something else i was realizing lately is this: why is it that sometimes we are so hard on the person who brought us into this world? the person who loved us first and most deeply?

we expect so much of our mothers. take, take, take- you know?

anyway, i was up in the middle of the night as usual with this kicking baby inside of me and i wrote something for oliofolio as i was thinking about this idea and it's called:

i'm beginning to realize - hope you enjoy. :)

oliofolio time

whether you remember it or not- you have most likely read the poem "this is just to say" by william carlos williams in one of your english classes at some point in your life. it is sassy and subtle and awesome and many, many poets have tried their hand at their own version. this week i really enjoyed creating mine with my own brand of sass.

Click here to read it! and feel free to browse any other entries and let us know what you think!

enjoy. :)

i wrote a poem called: the lasting shock

my friend lizzie started a blog for writers called oliofolio and asked me to be a regular contributor. this week makes it's second week going strong and i published my first piece on it a few seconds ago. each week we have a new theme and each day something fresh will be published from one of the contributing writers that has something to do with that week's theme. i will be contributing at least twice a month (hopefully more, i just have to get writing and be brave) and if you want to know the truth i am excited but a little nervous because so far the writing has all been so great that i feel like such an impostor. my insecurities aside, i am grateful for the chance to be a part anyway and honored that she even asked me. i think it will be good practice at the very least and it is so inspiring to read what everyone else writes and marvel at how good they are.

so this is my first piece on oliofolio: this is a test, or coming home to a place you've never been before. i was happy with it until i clicked "publish" and now i just see flaws, but here it is anyway. i hope to get better. head on over and let us know what you think of us all- we are eager to improve, create, share and grow.

dont blink

freeze this spark
and keep it: mine!
my baby's growing up.

he catches my heart
in one single act
a glance
a twinkle
a toddler chuckle.

he holds it
studied with furrowed brow,
then hugs it to his cheek

it twists
the pangs
it thumps
and bangs

it's his and he wont keep

he's growing
he's sprouting
he's changing
am i pouting?

my baby, my child, my boy

i'm pleased
heart broken
i'm proud
dynamic, outspoken

our love, his progress, my joy.

better to just be

dont force an identity or passion
the mind is a blur
cotton, wool, twirl
grey and thin
worn outside and in

content am i
to spin this lullaby
build that tower there
support you and share

girls pretending to be their mothers
when age doesnt match occupation

and

i'm more of a shadow
secure in my whim
fertile yet trim
hold onto my son
trade vogue for fun

not much of a sewer or crafter
or a homemaking whiz
not too concerned with whole wheat or canning just yet
children, music, art, and novels would be my best bet

but we all really do what we all do best

it's just what we like

there will be no test

isn't it lovely that no one's the same?

if you like movies better than cooking or yoga better than crafting there's really no shame.

i am what i am and not what i try to be
tomorrow could change
but today will Be.

no set requirements
bright, glowing love
concern and hope for you
trust up above
careful, thoughtful
hold on tight
hug them close
walk in the light.
